My accountant wanted us to sign up to Praemium which seemed expensive and we lost control over the administration of our investments. I came across Topshare during a Google search and have trialled it for the past week. It seems to fit our needs. [R.I.]
Chris, as already mentioned to you, I have no need of this service [the Subscription Data]; the Yahoo prices once a day is all I need. In fact I like downloading them and watching the movement in my various portfolio totals change. However, I have been using TopShare since V1 and with each upgrade, it just gets better; V3 is great. Must say I love the program, many things, but especially the way it handles dividends for multiple portfolios. Before topshare, I used MYOB and had to enter each dividend into each portfolio seperately [V.S.]
I’ve been using Topshare since I started the portfolio in 2003. It’s excellent. It’s Australian. It’s robust and has very good support. Great range of reports. A couple of clicks to update prices. Offers a range of capital gains options. Does almost everything. It even runs on Linux. I run off a couple of reports and send them to my account at tax time. Very happy camper. Ciao [C.V.]

Yes I am another person who would like the ability to track investments other than ASX securities. I have subscribed to StockDoctor for over 10 years, but use Topshare for portfolio management. It has a wonderful feature of giving IRR calculations for portfolio returns, and you can combine multiple portfolios. For instance, I use two brokers for advice, do trading by charting making my own decisions, and also run a StockDoctor based portfolio, as well as being a wholesale SD fund client. By having separate “owners” in Topshare, I can readily see which broker or decision maker or method is giving the better portfolio returns, regardless of the quantum of funds invested, and compare my own technical trading performance against the SD portfolio, and the LWSF and the brokers advised portfolios. The tax calcs and reports are also very good, with graphic presentation of some reports, but I do have to enter dividends (once for each code, even if held in multiple portfolios. All I will say is that the brokers are not as good as they claim, and the share fund has been a disappointment, too. It is an inexpensive program, and I recommend it as a management tool. After testing a number of paying and free Portfolio Management software programs over the last few months, we are pleased to advise that we have decided to use Topshare. Topshare is easy to input data, user friendly and thorough in its ability to handle complicated inputs. The Portfolio we entered into Topshare during the testing period included about 35 Companies, spanning actual transactions over a 25 year period, and involved a number of complicated moves, e.g. intricate mergers, instalment procedures, etc . All in all, albeit with a few initial teething problems, which were solved splendidly by your good help, both by phone and by online session time, we are very happy with the results. In addition, we are intending to use it for daily trades, as it also serves our purposes of ease and simplicity of use, as well as end-of-financial-year reporting. Chris, Thanks for the quick response. The regional settings were set to English (Australian), but it appears you were still on the money, as the date separator was set to [blank] for some reason. I have now reset the settings to the default English (Australian) values and all seems to be working well. I will let you know if the problem recurs. Hi Chris. For 15 years I have been using Q*** to track my share portfolio. Recently I had a problem with downloading share prices which I still believe is an issue with the program. They were unable to offer a solution and suggested in the end to ring their technical hotline @ $5 per minute. I now look forward to using Topshare which, on my 60 day evaluation, is a better product offering real time help if a problem arises. Thanks Chris [G.D.]

I can’t work out how you make a living, from selling us your excellent program, for a once only fee, and then we get to use it for years, with you sorting out problems for us, free of charge. I must say that I am mightily impressed by the evaluation. Many years ago I bought the M*** program, at the urging, I think, of “The Intelligent Investor”, and it took about an hour of helpdesk support to even get it to run. Then the data subscription service failed in installation and I consigned the whole M*** thing to the “FAILED PROGRAM” box and tried to forget it. I have found your in-program “Help” to be particularly valuable. [I.C.]

I have been down the path of IT suppliers not charging enough for their services and out of fear of client reactions not increasing prices – only to see them go broke. Thanks for your service, help and advice. I have been hoping to demonstrate your product to a friend of mine who owns a cattle property and now that I can load all my data onto the laptop, I will give him a demo and I know he will buy it on my recommendation. I find your product just what many people need as it is simple for them to use and as for myself in particular, my main use is for tax purposes, the reports being more that sufficient for my accountant. I have over the years recommended your product to many colleagues, friends and associates and I know many have purchased it up and appreciate the fact that that it is not complicated with too many bells and whistles, which tends to be the case with a lot of similar products. There is too much software out there which is over the top in detail and features, most of which the average Joe will never use. I also believe the price of your product is a competitive advantage. I think this is a very good piece of software. Your idea of the software working out and placing actual amounts via the percentage of imputation is excellent. It makes entering dividend information so easy and you can’t type in the wrong amount it’s all done for you. No spending hours trying to find the error! I’ve been there done that! I have used other software in the past and this is in my view so much better. [A.]

…I’m impressed with Topshare. I’ve been seeking just such a program as my shares are uncomfortably beyond the Excel spreadsheet stage. I visited many websites and even asked my accountant – the best he offered was to do it for me for an additional $1,200 per year – thanks, but no thanks!!. On trying Topshare my first reaction was “Well, how long has this been going on!” Life could have been so much easier for the recent tax season – and a the one before, and before that…. and so I very much welcome Topshare. I have downloaded the new version and have played around with the various changes. It is a very good program and after a little time is easily used. The change allowing dividend credits to go to different bank a/c’s is helpful. The tax reports, as with the previous version are excellent and make life simple for those of us who manage super fund shares. [R.D.]
I’ve been using Topshare from pretty early days. I had a fairly extemsive portfolio, about 25 Companies at that time, and was very green as regards computer skills; as I am in my 80’s. I had some reservations about coping. Anyway I took the plunge with Version 1.2, and set up my portfolio. I found all the operations pretty intuitive, and, with the up-grades that followed, my workload was further reduced. I recommend it as an excellent programme for anyone possessing only moderate computer skills. [F.J.]

Had lots of fun getting our 2 portfolios imported and then doing the conversions, adjustments, splits etc etc to get the data correct. Also, I was able to import the EOD figures etc – very impressive! I’m very happy with Topshare so far – its sophistication is impressive and I have a high level of confidence that it will meet our needs for the foreseeable future. It would appear that the platform, functional design and level of support has the capacity to support further development and features. My experience with xxxx, while not (too) negative, was such that I was uncomfortable with the lack of transparency and I did not feel we were receiving value for money. [D.S.]

I am an MYOB Certified Consultant and a PNA – I have quite a few clients for whom I administer (do the accounting for) their super funds and investments. To date I have managed to use MYOB and Excel, but find this too cumbersome with a large portfolio. …. I have tried Share Express 2000 and the MAUS software and find that Topshare is the most user-friendly by far. [S.W.]
